Yorkshire, Harewood House & Settle Carlisle Line

Yorkshire, Harewood House & Settle Carlisle Line

3 DAYS FROM £221

The Yorkshire Dales has one of the finest landscapes in the country; marvellous limestone formations contrast with heather clad moorlands with lovely villages and towns to explore along the way. Running through some of the most attractive scenery in the Dales and Cumbrian Fells, the Settle-Carlisle railway is not a preserved railway but still a vital part of the UK rail network which carries over a million passengers every year.

Located in the Wharfe Valley, the picturesque spa town of Ilkley offers some of Yorkshire’s finest tearooms, magnificent countryside and a rock climbers’ paradise with the famous Cow and Calf Rocks sitting proudly above the town.

Our base here is the very comfortable BEST WESTERN PLUS CRAIGLANDS HOTEL which is just a 5 minute walk from the town centre. Features of the hotel include a bar/ lounge with log fire and restaurant which both offer views of the hotel gardens and Yorkshire Moors beyond. All of the well appointed en suite bedrooms have tv, telephone and hospitality tray. A passenger lift serves all floors.

Easter Sunday 21st April
Departing Newark mid morning (please see specified pick up points below) we travel north making an extended break at the magnificent Harewood House, one of the Treasure Houses of England. Built in the 18th century, this historic Georgian property sits within a “Capability” Brown designed landscape with remarkable views from the award winning terraces. The opulent State Rooms feature rare art collections and Chippendale furniture whilst the well trodden corridors below stairs give an insight in to what life was like as a servant. Departing Harewood mid afternoon we make the short journey to our base in Ilkley.

Easter Monday 22nd April
After an early breakfast we travel to the nearby town of Skipton to board our train for the highlight of our stay a ride on the ‘Settle – Carlisle Railway. Running through some of the most attractive scenery in the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbrian Fells, the Settle-Carlisle railway is world famous for its Victorian architecture, huge stone viaducts, long tunnels and remote wayside station buildings. There will be approximately 3 hours at leisure in Carlisle for shopping/sightseeing before catching the train back to Skipton where we will be collected for the return journey to our hotel.

Tuesday 23rd April
Departing Ilkley after a leisurely breakfast we return via the pretty hill top village of Howarth (home of the Bronte family and the famous Parsonage) with its many tea rooms, and antiquarian bookshops. After free time here, we continue our journey, so home to Newark for late afternoon/teatime.
