8 DAYS FROM £476

Set in a breath-taking bay and surrounded by rolling Dorset hills, Weymouth’s popularity as a seaside resort is attributed to King George III who came to bathe in the sea as a health cure. The beach here is superb and sweeps around the bay along the extended promenade to the busy harbour with its ancient stone pier, from which all manner of craft set sail. The town is noted as one of the top angling venues in the country and along with golf, cycling, walking and bowling, the opportunity for leisure is endless.

Our base in Weymouth is once again the comfortable BERKELEY HOTEL, a Georgian listed building which is centrally situated on the sea front and offers stunning views across to Portland Harbour and the rugged Dorset cliffs. The hotel is located close to the harbour, Pavillion Theatre and ballroom, and the town centre is just a few minutes walk away. The Berkeley features a dining room and bar with dance floor where there is nightly evening entertainment and there is also a lounge with sea views. Naturally, all the en suite bedrooms have tv (with freeview), hairdryers and hospitality tray; some rooms have a sea view for which a supplement is payable – please see below for details. A passenger lift serves all floors but please note some stairs on all floors make this hotel unsuitable for those with walking difficulties.

BRIEF ITINERARY

Saturday 1st September
Departing Newark early morning, we travel southwards via Oxford, over the Downs and Salisbury Plain, so to the coast at Weymouth.

Sunday 2nd – Friday 7th September
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day tour through the heart of the Isle of Purbeck (via Corfe Castle) to Swanage with its beautiful curved bay. We then continue via the ferry across to Poole with its bustling quayside and Sandbanks Peninsula – home to the most expensive and luxurious property in the UK.
• Full day tour via Portland Bill (lighthouse) to Abbotsbury Swannery which was established by Benedictine Monks over a thousand years ago and is now the only place in the world where you can walk through the heart of a colony of over 600 nesting Mute Swans.
• Full day tour incorporating a visit to the National Trust owned Kingston Lacy House – an elegant country mansion built to resemble an Italian Palace set in attractive formal gardens and extensive parkland.
• Full day tour incorporating a viewing of the Cerne Abbas Giant, a chalk hill figure which stands at almost 180 feet tall and the Smiths Arms – reputedly England’s smallest public house which measures just 20ft by 10 ft! We then continue on to Dorchester for the afternoon – the county town of Dorset and famous for its association with Thomas Hardy.
