Suffolk: Dedham Vale & The Stour Valley

Suffolk: Dedham Vale & The Stour Valley

5 DAYS FROM £377

Both Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley embrace one of the UK’s most cherished landscapes. Picturesque villages, rolling farmland, ancient woodlands and a wide variety of local wildlife combine to create what many describe as the traditional English lowland landscape. The area has a rich history and has been the inspiration to many writers and artists. Located in the heart of East Anglia, the thriving market town of Sudbury dates back to Saxon times and has a heritage in the weaving and silk industries.

New for 2021, our base in Sudbury is the very comfortable MILL HOTEL Nestled on the riverbank by an ancient bridge and framed by weeping willows, this converted watermill features a restaurant (with working water wheel) and lounge/bar with outdoor terrace overlooking beautiful countryside. All of the en suite bedrooms have tv, telephone, hairdryer, iron and hospitality tray. Please note – there is no passenger lift but some ground floor rooms are available.

Brief Itinerary

Monday 9th August
Departing Newark midmorning, we travel south calling at the historic town of Bury St Edmunds for lunch/sightseeing. Home to Suffolk’s only cathedral, the town takes its name from St Edmund – the original patron saint of England. We then continue so to our base in Sudbury.

Tuesday 10th – Thursday 12th August
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day tour calling at the stunning Helmingham Hall Gardens. Home to the Tollemache family since 1487, the Garden moat predates the house and is thought to be of Saxon origin. Helmingham is famous for its Grade I listed gardens, redesigned by Lady Tollemache (a Chelsea Gold Medallist) set within a 400 acre deer park surrounding the moated Tudor Hall.
• Full day tour of beautiful Dedham Vale with its charming villages and landscapes still as recognisable today as they were when painted by Constable and Gainsborough. Included in our tour will be a visit to the National Trust owned Flatford Mill – inspiration for Constable’s most famous painting – The Haywain.
• Half day tour calling at the seaside towns of Walton-on-the-Naze and Frinton-on-Sea. With a reputation as an exclusive resort, Frinton retains an atmosphere of the 1920/30’s. Tree-lined avenues sweep down to the elegant Esplanade with its colourful Victorian-style beach huts.

Friday 13th August
Departing our hotel after breakfast, we return via an extended break in the city of Cambridge so home to Newark for approximately teatime.
