New for 2019, we are pleased to introduce a tour combining the beautiful Southern Cotswolds with Monmouthshire - the gastronomic capital of Wales. Largely rural, the Southern Cotswolds are characterised by pretty, quintessential English market towns, old churches and traditional country pubs. From the heights of the Brecon Beacons National Park to the wooded valley floor of the River Wye, Monmouthshire’s blend of Welsh and English cultures are typical of this once contested borderland at the entrance to Wales. Perhaps best known for its association with horse racing, our base in Chepstow offers impressive views across the Severn estuary of both the Severn Bridge and Second Severn crossing.

Our base, on the outskirts of Chepstow, is the superb MARRIOTT ST PIERRE HOTEL & COUNTRY CLUB, an idyllic retreat set in 400 acres of picturesque parkland and built around a 14th century manor house. Highly recommended by two of our valued private organisers, the St Pierre features the perfect blend of ancient architecture and modern amenities with its oak panelled AA rosette winning restaurant and contemporary Zest Lounge/Bar and Eatery. There is a superb health club and spa with indoor pool and fully equipped gymnasium and all of the very well appointed bedrooms have tv, hairdryer, iron/ironing board and hospitality tray. Please note - unfortunately there is no passenger lift.

BRIEF ITINERARY

Monday 10th June
Departing Newark early morning, we travel via Leicestershire into the scenic Cotswolds and an extended visit to the beautiful Painswick Gardens – England’s only surviving complete rococo garden. Designed in the 1740s as a fanciful pleasure garden for Benjamin Hyett and his guests, this hidden valley offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and intriguing garden buildings. Departing here mid-afternoon, we continue in a south westerly direction before crossing the magnificent Severn Bridge so to our base in Chepstow.

Tuesday 11th & Wednesday 12th June
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day tour of the Forest of Dean incorporating a ride aboard the Dean Forest Steam Railway followed by free time in the lovely market town of Monmouth with its many tudor timbered houses and iconic 13th century gatehouse bridge. We then return via Tintern Abbey and the picturesque Abbey Mill Wye Valley Centre with its original waterwheel, shops and café.
• Full day tour via Usk to the quaint Welsh market town of Abergavenny known as the ‘Gateway to Wales’. Following free time here we return via a visit to Llancaiach Fawr Manor – a superbly restored Grade I listed gentry house where history is tangible – witness life in the 17th century as costumed servants carry out their daily duties - you may even meet the master of the house.

Thursday 13th June
Departing after breakfast, we return via an extended break in the lovely Cotswolds town of Tetbury before returning so home to Newark for approximately teatime.
