We have pleasure in offering a tour (with a choice of departure date) based on the beautiful Isles of Scilly; a stunning archipelago of five inhabited islands and numerous other small rocky islets 28 miles off Lands End. With a total population of just over two thousand, the Scilly Isles bask in the Gulf Stream and enjoy a mild climate and countless golden sandy beaches. The largest island St Marys is considered the gateway to the rest of the islands and its capital Hugh Town has a cluster of shops, cafes, galleries and restaurants along with three stunning beaches.
Our base in Hugh Town is the very comfortable BELL ROCK HOTEL which is ideally situated on a level position, only 100 metres from the nearest beach and a ten minute walk from the harbour. Having welcomed visitors for over 100 years, the hotel features a restaurant, lounge/bar and small indoor swimming pool. All of the en suite rooms have tv, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. Please note there is no passenger lift and some bedrooms are accessed by steps.
Our driver will not accompany the group on St Marys. Some degree of mobility/walking is required to fully appreciate the tour and the excursions included. We therefore feel it is unsuitable for the very elderly/less mobile.
Brief Itinerary
1st Day (both tours)
Departing Newark early morning, we principally utilize the motorway system to take us southwards into Devon. Then skirting Dartmoor, we proceed to our overnight hotel in Plymouth.
2nd Day (both tours)
Departing our hotel after a very early breakfast we travel south to Penzance where we board the Scillonian ferry (as foot passengers) for the 2 ¾ hour crossing to St Mary’s. On arrival here we are met by a local coach company for the short transfer to the Bell Rock Hotel, our base for the next 4 nights.
3rd – 5th Day (both tours)
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• A morning introductory tour by local coach and guide of St Mary’s. Learn about the history and heritage of the islands with a light hearted but informative commentary, and stops at selected viewpoints for photos. The remainder of the day is yours at leisure
• Full day visit by local boat operator to the island of Tresco and admission to the famous Abbey Gardens established by Augustus Smith in the 19th century around the ruins of a Benedictine Abbey. Today, the garden is home to plants from across the world’s Mediterranean climate zones, from Brazil to New Zealand and Burma to South Africa.
• One free day at leisure. St. Mary’s is criss-crossed by 30 miles of nature trails, paths and other walking routes. You may also like to take a boat to one of the other islands; St Martin’s may be just two miles long, yet has some of the finest beaches in the British Isles, if not the world.
6th Day (both tours)
We check out of our hotel after breakfast and the remainder of the morning is at leisure before lunch at a local restaurant (included in tour price). We are then transferred by local coach to the port for boarding the ferry back to the mainland. On arrival here we are met by our coach/driver and transferred to Plymouth for an overnight stay.
Last Day (both tours)
Departing Plymouth after breakfast we return, so home to Newark for approximately teatime.
