With a shoreline dotted with sandy beaches, stunning cliffs and unique visitor attractions, it’s easy to see why the Isle of Wight has been a popular destination since Victorian times. Over half of the island has been designated as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’; a drive along the coast provides a never-ending series of spectacular views whilst inland you’ll find oldeworlde villages with pretty thatched cottages, where time seems to have almost stood still. The pretty resort town of Shanklin is split with the old village lying on the cliff top and the new village nestled close to the sea. The two are connected by a cliff lift.
New for 2021, our base in Shanklin is the very comfortable CHANNEL VIEW HOTEL which enjoys a superb location on the cliff top overlooking the bay. Family owned for the past 30 years, the Channel View prides itself on its hospitality and excellent local cuisine. Features include an indoor pool with sauna and bar/lounge and all of the rooms have en suite bedrooms, tv, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. A passenger lift serves all floors.
Brief Itinerary
Monday 23rd August
Departing Newark early morning, we travel south via Oxford and the Berkshire Downs so to the port where we board our ferry for the short crossing to the Isle of Wight. After disembarking, we continue the brief journey across the island to Shanklin.
Tuesday 24th – Saturday 28th August
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day tour including a visit to Osborne House, the former royal residence of Queen Victoria & Prince Albert. After first visiting Osborne, England’s longest-reigning monarch wrote ‘It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot’ • South island tour calling at the picturesque village of Godshill and Shanklin (Old Village) with its pretty thatched cottages housing gift shops and tea rooms
• East island tour including the historic harbour town of Yarmouth, Alum Bay (known for its unique coloured sand cliffs) and the majestic chalk Needles where you can take a chairlift ride for spectacular views over the bay.
• Full day tour including a ride aboard the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Settle back in beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian carriages and discover an idyllic view of the Island’s unspoilt countryside.
• A full day at leisure in Shanklin
Sunday 29th August
Departing the Isle of Wight after breakfast, we retrace our steps via a morning ferry crossing, so home to Newark for approximately tea time.
