The Far North of Scotland is an area rich in history with historic castles and ancient archaeological sites offering the visitor an opportunity to experience landscapes filled with spectacular mountains, deep lochs, sandy beaches and rugged coastal cliffs. Included in the tour is a visit to iconic Orkney where well-preserved archaeological and historical sites reflect over 5,000 years of human interaction with the island landscape.


Friday 15th May
Departing Newark early morning we principally utilise the motorway system to travel north over the Pennines to Gretna Green. Then we continue through scenic Lanarkshire so to our base
for the night – the comfortable HOLIDAY INN at East Kilbride (near Glasgow). All of the en suite bedrooms (with showers) have tv, telephone, iron/ironing board and hospitality tray.
A passengers lift serves all floors.

Saturday 16th May
We depart after a leisurely breakfast and travel north through beautiful Highland scenery making an extended break in the picturesque town of Grantown on Spey before crossing the Dornoch Firth and along the coast to the Viking town of Wick and our base for the next 4 nights the comfortable NORSEMAN HOTEL. Overlooking the river, this family run hotel features a restaurant and bar/lounge area along with picturesque gardens and a relaxing terrace. All of the en suite bedrooms have tv, trouser press and hospitality tray. Please note there is NO passenger lift but some ground floor rooms are available.

Sunday 17th – Tuesday 19th May
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day tour calling at John O’Groats, the starting point for many embarking on the famous ‘End to End’ journey to Land’s End. We then continue to the beautiful Castle of Mey, much loved home of Her Majesty the Queen Mother which has been kept just as it was when she was alive. The gardens offer magnificent views across the Pentland Firth where, on a clear day, the Old Man of Hoy can be seen on the horizon.
• Perhaps the highlight of the stay - a day visit by ferry as foot passengers to beautiful Orkney from where we board a local coach for a tour of the island. Highlights will include Skara Brae (the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in Western Europe) Scapa Flow (where German War boats were scuttled in World War I) the Ring of Brodgar and the beautiful Italian Chapel built by Italian prisoners of war in World War II.
• Half day tour to John O’Groats and a chance to have a photograph taken at the famous signpost.

Wednesday 20th May
Departing Wick after breakfast we make our way south calling for an extended break in the city of Inverness en route to Perth and our base for the next two nights –the comfortable SALUTATION INN which is located in the centre of the city. Dating from 1699, features of the hotel include a period restaurant, traditional bar and lounge. All of the en suite bedrooms have tv, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. A passenger lifts serves most bedrooms.

Thursday 21st May
(Our driver’s rest day) A full day at leisure in Perth, Scotland’s newest city. Nestled between two sprawling public parks with elegant Georgian town houses, cobbled streets and medieval spires, the city boasts an array of outstanding monuments, art galleries and museums to explore.

Friday 22nd May
Departing after a leisurely breakfast, we return, so home to Newark for approximately teatime.
