With no less than three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a World Heritage Coast and an amazing mixture of coastal and rural towns and villages, South Devon encompasses the very best the country has to offer. The Dartmoor National Park has much to discover, from its striking granite tors and steep wooded river valleys to swathes of heather-covered moorland and hidden villages. With history dating back to Neolithic times, Dartmoor is one of the few remaining areas of Britain that is truly wild and its ponies are still an iconic sight living as semi-wild herds all over the moor. Standing proudly on the south eastern edge of the moor, the imposing granite rocks of Haytor offer spectacular views across Dartmoor and the south Devon coast.

Our base for the tour is the superb MOORLAND HOTEL. Located in tranquil surroundings opposite Haytor, the hotel has been welcoming guests for over 100 years and can count Agatha Christie as one of its guests.

Boasting 11 acres of beautiful landscaped grounds, paddocks and woodland, wild ponies are often found grazing nearby. Features of the hotel include a restaurant with garden terrace, lounge/bar and brasserie and all of the very well furnished en suite bedrooms have tv, telephone, mini bar, robe/ slippers, hairdryer, ironing board and hospitality tray.

Please note - whilst there is a passenger lift, this serves most but not all bedrooms.

Brief Itinerary

Monday 11th October
Departing Newark early morning, we travel southwards via the scenic Cotswolds to join the motorway system which takes us into Devon and our base on Dartmoor.

Tuesday 12th – Thursday 14th October
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following;
• Full day tour including a boat cruise from Topsham to Exmouth. The quaint town of Topsham has a historic yet cosmopolitan atmosphere with a variety of cafes, a museum, boutiques, and some distinctive 17th Century Dutch style merchant town houses. Our hour long cruise takes us to Exmouth, one of the oldest and most picturesque resorts in Devon. After an afternoon at leisure
here, we are met by our coach for the return journey to our hotel.
• Full day tour including a visit to Buckfastleigh Abbey. Nestling in a valley on the edge of Dartmoor, the Abbey has award winning gardens and an excellent restaurant. We then continue to the coast at Dartmouth for an afternoon at leisure. One of South Devon’s most popular and enchanting towns, Dartmouth is situated on the River Dart and has charming historic streets, independent
shops, galleries and plentiful cafes.
• Full day visit to the city of Exeter. Pre-dating the arrival of the Romans in AD 50, Exeter’s history is rich and long. This is reflected in its fascinating visitor attractions including its unique Underground Passages, free Red Coat Guided Tours, magnificent Cathedral, imposing Roman wall and beautiful Quayside.

Friday 15th October
Departing after breakfast, we retrace our steps so home to Newark for approximately tea time.
