The unspoiled seaside town of Criccieth is perfectly situated on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park and at the gateway to the stunning, wild scenery of the Llyn Peninsula. With its unique charm and friendly atmosphere, this very sheltered south facing resort features an historic 13th Century castle, and riverside walks and is perhaps most famous for its’ associations with Lloyd George who is buried a few miles away.

Our tour includes a ride aboard the Welsh Highland Railway listed as one of the greatest train journeys in the world which runs 25 miles through the beautiful scenery of the Snowdonia National Park

Our base in Criccieth is once again the very comfortable family run LION HOTEL which is situated at the heart of the town with stunning views of the mountains, coast and castle. Formally an 18th century inn, the Lion has been family owned and operated for three generations, and features a restaurant and bar/lounge in which to relax with an after dinner drink. All of the comfortably furnished en suite bedrooms feature tv, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray and a passenger lift serves the majority of rooms. Please note several of our bedrooms are located in Castle View Cottage – (originally a stable block to the Inn) and are accessible via a very short outside walk.

BRIEF ITINERARY

BRIEF ITINERARY

Monday 20th April
Departing Newark early morning, we travel west making an extended break at Bridgemere Garden World (the UK’s largest garden centre) before continuing over the border into Wales and our base on the coast at Criccieth.

Tuesday 21st – Thursday 23rd April
Scheduled excursions during the stay will include the following:
• Full day tour including perhaps the highlight of the stay, a single journey ride aboard the Welsh Highland Railway. We board the train at Porthmadog and travel through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass and picture postcard village of Beddgelert, up and over the foothills of Snowdon so to Caernarvon with its narrow streets, stylishly redeveloped waterfront and famous 13th century Castle. After free time here our coach will collect us for the return journey to Criccieth.
• Half day visit to Portmeirion which is located on its own private peninsula on the southern shores of Snowdonia. Created by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis this beautiful Italianate styled village was built to demonstrate how a naturally beautiful place could be developed without being spoilt and was used extensively in the tv series ‘The Prisoner’.
• Full day tour calling at the popular resort of Barmouth which lies at the entrance to the beautiful Mawddach Estuary. The pretty harbour is overlooked by the headland of Dinas Oleu, birthplace of the National Trust and there is plenty to see and do including a Shipwreck & Lifeboat Museum, traditional seaside fun on the promenade and a full range of shops and cafés within a short walking distance from the lovely beach.

Friday 24th April
Departing after a leisurely breakfast, we return via Llangollen and The Horseshoe Pass, arriving back in Newark for approximately teatime.
