Based at PORTBYHAN HOTEL
DEPARTS MONDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER
RETURNS FRIDAY 1ST OCTOBER
5 Days from £490
From its rolling green hills to its sparkling coast, South East Cornwall is a visual feast where you can relive relics of the past on the rugged Bodmin Moor, discover picturesque fishing villages on the stunning coastline or take in the flora and fauna of the surrounding countryside. The secluded coves allowed smugglers to land on the deserted beaches before illicit goods would quickly disappear into caves or be taken by well-trodden paths inland to secret hiding-places. The resorts of East and West Looe, which are joined by a Victorian seven arched bridge, have quaint narrow streets and a busy quayside, indeed old fishing boats known as luggers can still be seen in the port on special occasions.
Our base in West Looe is the very comfortable family owned PORTBYHAN HOTEL which is situated in an unrivalled position right in the heart of Looe, with panoramic views over the harbour front and only a short walk in to the town centre. A £2 million refurbishment of the Portbyhan contributed to the hotel recently winning "Best Individual Hotel" at the prestigious National Coach Tourism Awards. Features include a restaurant, bar/lounge and sun terrace which offers a spectacular view over the harbour. All of the standard en suite bedrooms have tv, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. River views are available at a supplement please see pricing for details. A passenger lift serves all floors.
Please note restricted coach drop off points and the hilly nature of Cornwall make this holiday unsuitable for the very elderly/those with walking difficulties.
Brief Itinerary
Monday 27th September
Departing Newark, we principally utilise the motorway system to take us southwards into Devon before skirting the west side of Dartmoor into Cornwall and our base at Looe.
Tuesday 28th – Thursday 30th September
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• One full day takes us west along the coast calling at the pretty Georgian port of Charlestown before continuing around the coast to Mevagissey with its cafes and galleries which cluster around the harbour and pretty streets. Time permitting, we return via the historic town of Fowey, a small bustling port with many interesting shops and delightful cafes/tearooms. (Please note – it is a 15 minute steep walk to access the town from the coach park – regular service buses do run at an additional cost).
• A full day tour calling at the National Trust owned Cotehele – an atmospheric Tudor House with medieval roots, working water mill on a historic quay and garden with valley views. A restored sailing barge is moored at the quay where you can also treat yourself to a Cornish ‘jam first’ cream tea!
• Half day tour to the picture postcard fishing village of Polperro (notorious for smuggling in the 18th century and where cars are banned from the narrow streets). Following our return there will be an afternoon at leisure in Looe.
• A performance by a local sea shanty group on one evening in our hotel. The origins of the traditional Sailors’ Sea Shanty have been lost in the midst of time. Traceable from at least the mid 1400s, the shanty hails from the days of the old merchant ‘tall’ sailing ships when the rhythmic singing aided the hard manual labour on board.
