Bordered by the River Shannon and the Atlantic Ocean, the West Coast of Ireland lives up to its image as an unspoilt landscape of windswept mountains, dramatic cliffs and a countryside dotted with pretty villages and lakes. They say when you visit Connemara you "experience the real beauty of Ireland". This stunning landscape of pale grey mountains, golden beaches, sparkling loughs, rugged bogs and shimmering waterfalls is a place of remote beauty thats also home to the hardy, agile, but also gentle Connemara Pony. Our base for the tour is the vibrant town of Clifden; surrounded by spectacular scenery it is emerging as the WestsGourmet Capital and is an ideal place from which to explore.
Our base in Clifden is the very comfortable CLIFDEN STATION HOUSE HOTEL which is very centrally situated just a 5 minute walk from the town centre. Based around the old railway station, the restaurant is on the old platform and there is also a library bar and lounge along with a small cinema, spa and leisure centre. All of the en suite bedrooms feature tv, hairdryer, telephone, iron/ironing board and hospitality tray. There is a passenger lift to all bedrooms but please note there are 10 steps to the leisure complex.
Saturday 6th June
Departing Newark early morning we travel via Derbyshire and Chester into Wales and then over the Menai Bridge to Holyhead and an afternoon sailing to Dublin. After disembarking in Ireland it is a short journey to our overnight hotel on the outskirts of the city.
Sunday 7th June
We leave our hotel after a leisurely breakfast and continue west via Athlone and Galway, where we make an extended break for sightseeing before continuing to the coast at Clifden and our base for the next 4 nights - the Clifden Station Hotel.
Monday 8th – Wednesday 10th June
Our scheduled excursion programme during the stay will include the following:
• Full day tour through the Connemara National Park. See the Twelve Bens (Pins) mountain range before arriving at Glen Keen Farm where we will be treated to a sheep herding demonstration, traditional Irish Music and refreshments. We then continue on to the beautiful Killary Fjord (the only fjord in Ireland) and a scenic cruise aboard a luxury catamaran
• Full day tour including a visit to magnificent Westport House. Surrounded by the majestic expanse of Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and Ireland’s holy mountain Croagh Patrick, the origins of the house date back to the 1500’s when the legendary Pirate Queen of Connaght, Grace O’Malley, reigned here in one of her many castles. Our visit will be followed by free time in the pretty town
of Westport with its rejuvenated Quay area full of shops, bars and cafés.
• Free day at leisure in Clifden (our driver’s rest day). Enjoy the delights of this traditional Irish town before returning to the hotel for an afternoon film showing of the Quiet Man starring John Wayne which is set in Connemara.
Thursday 11th June
Departing Clifden after breakfast we call at Connemara Celtic Crystal in Moycullen for a guided tour and chance to watch these beautiful objects being made, before continuing east to Dublin. Time permitting there will be the opportunity to have some free time at leisure to explore the city before re-joining the coach for the short journey to our overnight hotel.
Friday 12th June
Departing our hotel very early we make the short transfer to the port where we board the ferry for our return sailing (due to the early start breakfast will be served on board the ferry). On arrival into Holyhead, we retrace our steps so home to Newark for aproximately teatime.
