Caledonian Canal & Strathspey Railway

Caledonian Canal & Strathspey Railway

6 DAYS FROM £453

The traditional highland village of Newtonmore is reputedly the geographical centre and walking capital of Scotland. Set in the Cairngorm National Park this is an area surrounded by fertile valleys, wild rocky corries, cascading waterfalls and tranquil lochs – an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful and dramatic scenery.

Very popular in recent years, our base in Newtonmore is once again the HIGHLANDER HOTEL, owned and run by the same family for over 35 years. The hotel features a comfortable lounge, bar and restaurant serving fine Scottish cuisine and naturally, all of the en suite bedrooms feature tv, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. Unfortunately, whilst there is no lift, several ground floor rooms are available on a request basis.

Friday 6th July
Departing Newark early morning, we travel northwards crossing over the scenic Pennines en route to the Scottish border at Gretna. Then bypassing Glasgow and Perth, we continue to the Highlands and our base at Newtonmore.

Saturday 7th – Tuesday 10th July
Scheduled excursions during the stay will include the following:
• Full day tour including a 3 hour cruise through the Great Glen along the Caledonian Canal which was constructed in the nineteenth century to connect the east and west coasts of Scotland. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, otters and eagles and marvel at the fascinating historical landmarks, pretty lochs, inlets and spectacular mountains. A traditional Scottish cream tea will be served on board.
• Full day tour including a ride aboard the Strathspey Steam Railway through the stunning Cairngorm National Park - home of Britain’s highest mountain range and an area of outstanding natural beauty. Departing from Aviemore Station, the journey takes us to Boat of Garten, also know as the ‘Osprey Village’ before heading to Broomhill Station: fans of the popular BBC series Monarch of the Glen will recognise it as ‘Glenbogle’!
• Full day tour calling at the lovely Victorian town of Pitlochry which nestles beneath its own mountain - Ben Vrackie. There will be an opportunity to visit the newly opened £4million Dam Visitor Centre, which showcases the history of hydro-electricity and view the fish ladder which helps the salmon as they swim up river to their breeding grounds.
• Full day visit to Inverness - the Capital of the Highlands. Located on the River Ness, the city offers a host of historic buildings including a fine cathedral and castle which is now a courthouse. Enjoy some retail therapy in the compact centre or perhaps a stroll along the river and through the Ness Islands where you can watch anglers casting long lines to leaping Atlantic salmon.

Wednesday 11th July
Departing Newtonmore after breakfast, we retrace our steps so home to Newark for approximately teatime/early evening.
