"With a fine sea view in front, the mountains behind, the glorious estuary running eight miles inland, and Cader Idris within compass of a day’s walk, Barmouth can always hold its own against any rival." These are the words of William Wordsworth who visited Barmouth in the 19th century, and it would be fair to say that today’s visitors wouldn’t disagree with him. The seaside town, one of Wales’ most popular resorts, is gloriously located on the Mawddach estuary and its blue flag beach is like a golden carpet laid out in front of the towering Snowdownian backdrop.

Our tour includes a ride aboard the Cambrian Coast Railway - hugging the coastline, this is one of the most stunningly attractive coastal rail journeys in the country.

New for 2021, our base in Barmouth is the very comfortable family run MIN Y MOR HOTEL which is ideally located on the promenade overlooking Cardigan Bay. Features of the hotel include a restaurant (well regarded by locals) lounge/bar and a front outside terrace offering spectacular views over the sea. All of the individually decorated en suite bedrooms have tv and hospitality tray. Please note there is no passenger lift, but some ground floor rooms are available.

Brief Itinerary

Monday 6th September
Departing Newark early morning, we travel west through Staffordshire to Shrewsbury where we make an extended break for lunch. We then cross the border in to Wales and continue via Welshpool so to the coast at Barmouth.

Tuesday 7th – Thursday 9th September
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day tour through spectacular scenery via Lake Bala (the largest natural lake in Wales) to the bustling mountain village of Betws-y-Coed – the Gateway to Snowdonia which has a distinctly Alpine feel enhanced by the surrounding dense Gwydyr Forest. After free time here we return via Blaenau Ffestiniog (once the slate capital of Wales) and the scenic coastal route at Harlech (castle).
• Half day tour via Dolgellau and views across to the impressive Cader Idris mountain so to the small bustling market town of Machynlleth. Considered a ‘bit of a gem’ by locals there are numerous antique stores, alternative lifestyle shops, galleries featuring local crafts and cafes to explore. We then return for an afternoon at leisure in Barmouth.
• Full day tour and perhaps the highlight of the stay, a ride aboard the Cambrian Coast Railway to Pwllheli on the Lleyn Peninsula. Boarding the train in Barmouth, the journey showcases sandy beaches, coastal villages and out standing views. The railway line is pretty dramatic and in places clings to high cliffs and burrows through tunnels hewn from the rock. There will be free time
in the coastal resort of Pwllheli with its south facing beach and marina before rejoining the train for our journey back to Barmouth.

Friday 10th September
Departing after breakfast, we return via an extended break for lunch/sightseeing in Nantwich so home to Newark for approximately tea time.
