Northumbria is Englands most northern county: a magical place filled with ancient castles, golden sand beaches, rolling hills, rugged moorland and friendly towns and villages. The 100 mile long coastline is a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which sweeps from the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north to Tynemouth in the south. Much of the area is unpopulated and tranquil with mile after mile of clean and safe award winning golden sandy beaches and quiet country lanes.
The pretty medieval market town of Alnwick still retains many of its cobbled streets, narrow alleys and fine stone buildings which now house a range of specialist shops and family businesses.
Our base in the heart of Alnwick is the very comfortable WHITE SWAN HOTEL, a charming 300 year old coaching inn with a unique heritage located just a short walk from the famous castle and gardens. The Olympic Suite Restaurant features panelling, mirrors and stained glass salvaged from the Titanics sister ship the RMS Olympic and there is also a brasserie serving drinks and light snacks throughout the day. All of the comfortable en suite bedrooms reflect the historic ambience of the hotel and feature tv, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. Please note there is no passenger lift.
Brief Itinerary
Monday 2nd August
Departing Newark early morning, we utilise the A1/motorway system to travel northwards making an extended break (approximately 2 hours) in Durham before continuing to our base at Alnwick.
Tuesday 3rd – Thursday 5th August
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day tour including a visit to Lindisfarne (Holy Island). Only accessible at low tide, this ancient and historic location is famous for its links to early Christianity and Castle, which sits on the highest point of the island and is now owned by the National Trust. In the afternoon we visit the pretty border town of Berwickupon-Tweed with its attractive red roofed houses and pinkish grey Georgian buildings.
• Full day tour calling at the waterfront town of Amble with its new Harbour Village – a lovely shopping experience of 15 wooden retail pods selling cards and prints, bespoke gifts and food and drink. We then return via the ancient village of Warkworth which is built on a rocky spur encircled by a loop of the River Coquet and dominated by its magnificent Castle.
• On our final full day we have a choice of visits to either the beautiful Alnwick Garden or magnificent Castle. Created from a derelict site just 10 years ago garden features a Grand Cascade (the largest water feature in the country), Poison and Serpent Gardens and one of the world’s largest tree houses with wobbly bridges and walkways in the sky. Alnwick Castle is the second largest
inhabited castle in the country and has featured as the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films.
