The company was established as Wright & Sons as long ago as 1926 on Lincoln Road in Newark. The original proprietor was Mr Charles Wright and he was soon assisted by his sons Frank and, a little time later, by his other son Leslie.
Originally the business operated buses without the luxury of any glass windows - the first service running between Newark & Ollerton which amazingly is still in operation today. At this time, Lincoln Road was the main A46 (before the bridge over the railway was built) and the business sold petrol attracting much passing trade.
During the difficult war years, the company was involved in many troop movements and services to the local airfield. By the mid 1960's, Leslie had left the business to Frank who was joined by his son Terry after he had served his apprenticeship at 'Shipsides' and returned from National Service.
The company continued to grow steadily and began operating holidays during the late 1960's. These, along with the express services operated to Torquay, Bournemouth and Great Yarmouth proved to be an 'instant hit'. 'Works' fortnight during late July/early August was always a very busy time for Travel Wright as Newark's industry virtually shut down and many people did not own cars. How times have changed........
During the 1980's Terry was joined by all three of his children - David, Paula & Colin who all remain with the company today.
In the early years of the 21st century it became obvious the business had outgrown and outdated on its' Lincoln Road site so the monumental decision was taken to relocate to purpose built premises. This eventually happened on 23rd August 2005 and immediately the business was transformed for employees and customers alike. The modern workshop facility was welcomed by the fitting staff and the new main building by the office staff, who were treated to inside toilets! Customers also benefitted from parking facilities and reception with a comfortable waiting area.
Today, we operate approximately 30 buses/coaches and we continue to adapt and develop as market conditions change and opportunities arise.
Here's to the next 90 years!
